CAMPAIGN ROADMAP
Smart Growth & Affordable Housing
The demand for housing in Salt Lake City has never been higher, and our district is feeling the pressure. I believe we can accommodate new growth without sacrificing the unique character we all cherish. My commitment is to advocate for policies that increase our housing stock and affordability while protecting our historic neighborhoods.
-
Neighborhood Community Plans: I will be a strong advocate for the updated and current plans for the neighborhoods in District 3 that is flexible and responsive to modern housing needs. This includes exploring policies that allow for a variety of housing types, from single-family homes to duplexes and townhomes, while ensuring new developments are architecturally compatible with the surrounding area.
-
Support for ADUs and "Missing Middle" Housing: We need to make it easier for our residents to be part of the solution. I will champion policies that streamline the permitting process for accessory dwelling units (ADUs) and other "missing middle" housing types, providing more affordable options for families, students, and seniors.
-
Balanced Development: New development, especially near transit corridors like the future S-Line and TRAX extensions, should be designed with the community in mind. I will work to ensure these projects provide meaningful community benefits, such as enhanced public spaces and transit-oriented designs, that integrate seamlessly with our established neighborhoods.
Support for Small Business Owners
Our small businesses are the economic engine and cultural soul of District 3. They create jobs, foster community, and make our neighborhoods vibrant places to live. They need more than just support—they need a true partner on the City Council.
-
A Small Business Advocate: I will serve as a dedicated advocate for our local entrepreneurs, helping them navigate city regulations and access resources.
-
Revitalize Local Commerce: I will champion initiatives to revitalize our commercial corridors by advocating for targeted grants, simplified permitting, and tax incentives that help small businesses open and thrive. I will also push for protections for businesses impacted by long-term construction projects, such as the I-15 expansion and utility work, ensuring they have the financial support needed to survive.
-
Encourage Entrepreneurship: I will work to connect aspiring and current small business owners with essential city and county resources like the Salt Lake City Library's business assistance programs, the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), and local funding opportunities.
Enhancing Green Spaces
The quality of our air and the availability of natural spaces are fundamental to our health and quality of life. District 3's proximity to City Creek Canyon and Memory Grove Park gives us a unique responsibility to protect and expand our urban green spaces.
-
Urban Forestry & Community-Based Mapping: I will prioritize expanding our urban tree canopy to combat the urban heat island effect and improve air quality. I will also support a community-based mapping program, allowing residents to identify potential sites for new trees and green spaces. By empowering residents, we can make our city greener, block by block.
-
Expand and Maintain Public Lands: I will push for increased funding to maintain our city parks and trails and advocate for the creation of new pocket parks and green spaces within our neighborhoods.
-
Support the Green Loop: The Salt Lake City Green Loop is a transformative project. I will champion its expansion into District 3, specifically along its proposed route, to create safer, more connected, and enjoyable routes for pedestrians and cyclists. This means I will advocate for prioritizing District 3's segments, such as the 500 West and South Temple portions, to ensure our neighborhoods are directly connected to downtown amenities, other trails, and transit hubs.
Public Safety, Mental Health, & Substance Abuse
Public safety is not just about law enforcement; it's about addressing the root causes of crime and distress. I am committed to a compassionate, comprehensive approach that supports all residents.
-
Unsheltered People Protections: I believe in a strategy that respects the dignity of our unsheltered community members while ensuring public spaces are safe and accessible for everyone. I will advocate for a sustainable coordinated response to homelessness that focuses on connecting individuals with housing, mental health services, and substance abuse treatment.
-
Criminal Justice Support & Alternative Responses: We must invest in programs that provide alternatives to traditional law enforcement for non-violent incidents, such as civil issues, mental health crises, and substance abuse issues. This means supporting strategies that de-escalate or minimize punishment for non-violent civil offenses to better serve our community while enabling law enforcement to focus on more critical issues. This approach will allow us to build a more effective, compassionate system.
-
Expanding Access to Care: I will partner with Salt Lake County and local providers to expand access to mental health, substance abuse , or housing instability services. I will also champion the Salt Lake City Justice Court's Homeless Outreach Court. This compassionate alternative to the traditional justice system connects individuals with the legal aid, housing, and treatment they need to find stability and reduce recidivism.
